Roman numerals
2026 is MMXXVI and 1994 is MCMXCIV. 4 is IV and 9 is IX. A form that repeats an additive numeral four times, such as IIII, is not read. The text stays in this browser.
Why this exists
A clock’s IIII is an older mark that uses four I letters, and this page writes 4 as IV.
Writing the same number from the largest symbol gives the shortest standard form. 1994 splits into 1000, 900, 90, and 4.

03Worth knowing
IIII, VV, IC, and IM are not the standard form, so they stop.
Fractions and negatives are not read. 4000 and above are not written in this notation without bars.
Editing one field updates the other. A bad letter hides the result.
This conversion is not a cipher. It writes the same number with other symbols.

How this page works it out
This page turns a whole number from 1 through 3999 into standard Roman numerals. I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500, and M is 1000. 2026 is MMXXVI and 1994 is MCMXCIV. 4 is IV, 9 is IX, 40 is XL, 90 is XC, 400 is CD, and 900 is CM.
Subtraction is only IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, and CM. I, X, C, and M repeat at most three times, and V, L, and D do not repeat. The letters are turned into a number and then back into the standard form, so IIII, VV, and IC stop when they do not match. 3999 is MMMCMXCIX. 0, 4000, fractions, and negatives are not read. Lower case is read as upper case.
This conversion is not a cipher, and it is separate from the page that romanizes a Korean name. The text stays in this browser and is not sent to a server.
