Morse code

SOS is ... --- ... . hello world puts / between the words. A run of dots with no space is one symbol, so ..... is 5. More than 5,000 characters stops.

Why this exists

The same row of dots is several letters when spaces are present, and one digit when they are not. ..... is 5, and .... . is HE.

This table is International Morse. It changes the letters and leaves the meaning alone.

  1. 01How to use it

Typing SOS in the text field puts ... --- ... in the Morse field.

Typing ... --- ... in the Morse field puts SOS in the text field. Copy puts both fields on one clipboard line.

Clearing one field clears the other. Closing the tab clears the text.

  2. 02What you get

    SOS is ... --- ... .

    hello world is .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -.. .

    2026 is ..--- ----- ..--- -.... , and ..... is 5.

    EnteredSOS

    SOS ... --- ...
    hello world .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -..
    2026 ..--- ----- ..--- -....
    ..... 5
  3. 03Worth knowing

A run with no space between letters is one symbol. ...---... is not SOS.

Accented letters, Hangul, Japanese, and Chinese are not in this table, so they stop.

A mark that is not listed, such as a tilde or an asterisk, stops. The apostrophe that is read is '.

This conversion is not a cipher. It shows the same letters as dots and dashes.

How this page works it out

This page writes letters in International Morse. A is .- , S is ... , and O is --- , so SOS is ... --- ... . A space splits letters and / splits words. hello world is .... . .-.. .-.. --- / .-- --- .-. .-.. -.. . Lower case is read as upper case.

Digits have their own codes. 2026 is ..--- ----- ..--- -.... . ..... with no space is 5, and .... is H. OK? is --- -.- ..--.. . The extra marks are the period, comma, question mark, exclamation mark, slash, parentheses, &, :, ;, =, +, -, _, quotation mark, $, and @.

More than 5,000 characters stops. A letter that is not in the table, such as é, Hangul, Japanese, Chinese, or a tilde, stops. An empty word such as // and a run with no spaces such as ...---... also stop. The meaning is not translated. The same letters are shown as dots and dashes, and the text stays in this browser.
